"Entrepreneurship and Start-Up Ecosystem in India: Opportunities and Challenges"

Abstract Entrepreneurship plays an important role in economic development, innovation, employment generation and business growth. In India, the start-up ecosystem has expanded considerably over the last decade due to digitalization, technological development, changing consumer preferences, increasing investment opportunities and government support. The launch of the Startup India initiative in 2016 provided an institutional framework for promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. The present study examines the development and current scenario of entrepreneurship and the start-up ecosystem in India, with particular focus on government initiatives, entrepreneurial models, growth opportunities, challenges and future prospects. The study is entirely based on secondary data collected from government publications, Startup India, DPIIT, NITI Aayog and relevant academic literature. As of 31 March 2026, more than 2.23 lakh startups had received DPIIT recognition and these recognized startups had generated more than 23.36 lakh direct jobs. More than 1.07 lakh recognized startups had at least one woman director or partner. The study finds that India has developed a broad and increasingly diversified entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, access to finance, skilled talent, regulatory complexity, geographical disparities, commercialization of innovation and long-term sustainability continue to present challenges. The study concludes that the future of Indian entrepreneurship will depend on innovation, technology adoption, inclusive access to finance, entrepreneurship education, industry-academia collaboration and supportive policies.
