Data-driven learning: a qPCR lab module that incorporates quantitative feedback to encourage technical problem solving
ABSTRACT Hands-on lab experience is invaluable for students, not only for practicing foundational techniques but also for their application of the scientific process and scientific reasoning. Here, we describe a quantitative PCR (qPCR) teaching lab module that allows students to use their own standard-curve data to improve their technique and confidence in standard lab practices. We describe the module in the context of a Mesorhizobium loti system, but the lab activities can be easily adapted to any other system in which (q)PCR is applicable. We then briefly describe extensions of this qPCR standard-curve module that can expand students’ learning opportunities.
