Prevalence of primary extraocular neoplasms in patients with choroidal melanoma

Background and objective: Uveal melanoma is the most common primary malignant intraocular tumor in adults. The early detection and surveillance of patients with uveal melanoma have made it possible to assess the presence of other associated pathologies, as well as the existence of another tumor. The main objective of this study was to describe the presence of extraocular primary tumors diagnosed before or after the diagnosis of Choroidal Melanoma.Materials and methods: A retrospective, observational and analytical cohort study was conducted between January 2007 and April 2020 of patients who attended the Ophthalmology Service, Ocular Oncology Section, Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Results: Demographic data, tumor characteristics, and treatment were analyzed. The density of incidence of metastasis in the cohort and according to each group was determined.Of a total of 137 patients, 79 were women and 58 men.The mean age was 57.62 years.Of these, 28 (20.43%) had another tumor.46.43% were prior and 53.57% after the diagnosis of choroidal melanoma. The neoplasms found were breast (2.38%), lung (1.59%), kidney (3.17%), prostate (2.38%), skin (1.59%), gastrointestinal (2.38%), hematological (2.38%), thyroid (0.79%), gynecological (2.38%), cavum tumor (0.79%) and 2.38% in more than one location. Conclusions: This is the first study to evaluate the prevalence of other tumors in patients with choroidal melanoma in Argentina. The results were comparable with world cohorts.
