Effectiveness of a Deep Learning Pedagogy-Based Electrical Installation Practicum Job Sheet in Fostering Student Learning Autonomy

This study examined the efficacy of a deep-learning pedagogy-based electrical installation practicum job sheet (DLPJ) in fostering students' learning autonomy within the context of technical and vocational education and training (TVET). The evolving demands of the TVET industry necessitate graduates who possess technical skills and demonstrate the capacity for independent learning, reflective practice, and adaptive problem-solving. Employing a convergent mixed-methods design grounded in deep learning pedagogy and self-regulated learning theory, this study investigated this phenomenon using a sample of 64 undergraduate students enrolled in an electrical installation practicum course. Data collection involved the administration of the Learning Autonomy Scale at both the pretest and posttest stages, with analysis conducted through analysis of covariance and mixed analysis of variance. Qualitative data were gathered via semi-structured interviews to gain insights into students' learning experiences and perceptions. The findings indicated a significant enhancement in learning autonomy among students utilizing the DLPJ, with very large effect sizes reflecting substantial improvements in planning, monitoring, and self-evaluation. Qualitative data further suggested increased reflective thinking and confidence in task performance, as well as greater independence in resolving practical electrical installation challenges. These results suggest that integrating reflective inquiry, conceptual thinking, and self-reflection into laboratory lessons can effectively merge cognitive and psychomotor learning in vocational training programs. The study concludes that immersive learning pedagogy can transform traditional procedural job sheet into autonomy-focused learning tools, offering a practical instructional model for preparing flexible and work-ready graduates in the technology and vocational education sectors.
