Bridging the Gap

The role of the Chief Nursing Informatics Officer in Military Treatment Facilities is important to optimizing health care operations and implementing health information technology systems. However, the lack of standardized role definitions often leads to underutilization and inconsistent application of Chief Nursing Informatics Officer expertise. This project explored the perceived role of Chief Nursing Informatics Officers within the United States Military Treatment Facilities. A needs assessment evaluated Chief Nursing Informatics Officers’ understanding of their role expectations compared with how they actually allocate their time. The assessment was distributed to Chief Nursing Informatics Officers, health care leaders, and staff nurses across facilities in the United States, Asia, and Europe. Findings revealed disparities between role perception and daily duties, as all Chief Nursing Informatics Officers held additional primary responsibilities. The gap analysis revealed inconsistencies in role alignment, with Chief Nursing Informatics Officers often unable to focus on informatics priorities due to competing duties and differing role perceptions among leaders and nurses. The project resulted in a standardized Chief Nursing Informatics Officer position description for Military Treatment Facilities. Addressing these challenges created an opportunity to enhance the informatics utilization and productivity.
