Environmental Advocacy and Visual Framing: Social Documentary Filmmaking as a Tool for Legitimation and Change

This study examines the impact of narrative technologies on the perception of environmental advocacy. The aim is to evaluate how the social documentary “Brazil: Seeding Sociobioeconomies” acts as a strategic device for communication and social mobilization. The research question investigates how visual narrative strategies and compositional structuring deconstruct traditional framings of the climate crisis, reimagining the relationship between biocultural memory, innovation, and sustainable development. The methodology is based on the conceptual distinction between narration and storytelling, applying the method of Visual Narrative Analysis (VNA) to interpret the translation of discourse into moving images and its capacity to construct social reality, complemented by Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and, more specifically, its multimodal evolution, Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA). The expected results aim to demonstrate that social documentary works as a legitimizing tool, accrediting the socio-bioeconomy not as a nostalgic regression, but rather as an updating of memory and an evolution of identity capable of guaranteeing sustainability and global climate justice.
