Maxillary Canine with Aberrant Canal Configuration – A Case Report and Literature Review
Background: The complete disinfection of the root canal system is the main requirement for the success of endodontic therapy. The presence of complex root canal anatomies that hinder the chemical and mechanical disinfection of the canals can negatively impact the prognosis of the tooth.Aim: This article reports a maxillary canine with two canals that were identified during endodontic treatment and a literature review pertaining to the same.Case description: Maxillary anterior teeth usually present with one root comprising of a single canal. The present case describes endodontic management of a maxillary canine with a Vertucci type II canal configuration and also discusses the literature pertaining to anatomical complexities in maxillary canine. Conclusion and clinical significance: Although worldwide occurrence of maxillary canines with two canals appears to be a rare entity with a prevalence of only 1.4%, this anatomical variation has been reported more frequently in the Indian subcontinent.
