Viatological Standard Lexicon (VSL-2026)
The Viatological Standard Lexicon (VSL-2026) is the reference vocabulary of viatology, the scientific study of roads. It provides a controlled set of terms for describing road and highway infrastructure consistently across jurisdictions, languages and eras. Each entry combines established highway engineering and legal terminology with field-verified usage drawn from the photographic archive of the Worldwide Transportation Library, which documents road, rail and maritime infrastructure on all seven continents. Entries give the part of speech, subject domain and definition, with synonyms, related terms and usage notes where recorded. This edition (version 1.4.0, revised 29 September 2026) contains 1,312 English-language terms. Translated entries in French, German, Italian, Romansh, Spanish and Chinese are maintained in the online edition at https://viatology.org/vsl.html. Companion lexicons cover rail (FSL-2026) and waterways (MSL-2026). The Viatype Architecture, which classifies road segments by physical structure rather than local naming, is documented at https://viatology.org/viatype.html.
