Relationship Between Sickness Insight on Coping and Quality of Life Among Patients With Neurological Disorders: A Correlational Study

Objectives The study aimed to determine the relationship between sickness insight, coping, and quality of life (QoL) among patients with neurological disorders. Material and Methods This is a correlational study conducted among patients ( n = 112) diagnosed with neurological disorders who were admitted to a tertiary care hospital, in Mangaluru, South India. A purposive sampling technique was used to select the participants. The baseline proforma, sickness insight in coping questionnaire (SICQ), and neuro-QoL scale were used to collect information from participants. Results The mean age of patients with neurological diseases in the present study was 45 years; 92% were married, and 94.6% had no significant family history of neurological diseases. The study results showed that positivism ( r = 0.20) is significantly associated with the physical domain during hospitalisation ( p = 0.03) and has a unidirectional effect on QoL. Furthermore, the physical domain is negatively associated with non-acceptance ( p = 0.01). Non-acceptance ( r = -0.26) throughout the hospitalisation period is negatively associated with the psychological domain of QoL ( p = 0.01). Positivism was associated with stigma (r = -0.20) and had a bidirectional effect on QoL ( p = 0.02). Conclusion Insight into neurological illness, educational status, family income, and financial support were the most important indicators associated with QoL. The various domains of insight into neurological illness need to be considered to develop specific, patient-centred, evidence-based interventions that enhance recovery and improve QoL.
