Shared Safety: Humans and Automation in High-Consequence Industries
This paper accompanies a panel on human-automation interaction through the lens of safety in high-consequence industries. The panelists are researchers and practitioners whose work spans nuclear power, defense, aviation, surface transportation, cybersecurity, and petrochemical industries. They explore how joint human-automation systems can be designed such that humans and automation complement each other to ultimately enhance safety. Human factors professionals play a crucial role in the research, design, evaluation, and implementation of highly automated systems in safety-critical industries.
