Neuroretinitis: the clinical features and the treatment results

To observe the clinical features of neuroretinitis and to investigate treatment outcomes in neuroretinitis. Clinical records from 9 patients (9 eyes) diagnosed with neuroretinitis were collected and analyzed, including demographic data, medical history, and clinical findings at baseline and during post-treatment follow-up visits. Final analysis included clinical records from six females and three males aged 10 to 57 years. The interval from symptom onset to presentation varied from 3 days to 2 months. Fever was reported in 5 of 9 cases, contact with pets in 3 patients (one involving a scratch), and no prodromal symptoms were noted in two of the patients. All affected eyes showed optic disc edema and macular star exudates, with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ranging from counting fingers at 50 cm to 1.0. Systemic and lymph node examinations were unremarkable. Blood tests, including C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate, chest CT, orbital MRI, AQP4-IgG, and MOG antibody testing, were within normal limits or negative. Serology revealed only one patient positive for Bartonella ; all syphilis and viral serologies were negative. Visual acuity improved in all patients during follow-up, with the exception of one case lost to follow-up. In this case series, neuroretinitis most frequently affects adolescent females. Fever is a major triggering factor, and all patients exhibit the of optic disc edema and macular star exudates. Although some patients present with severely impaired visual acuity, the overall prognosis for vision was favorable with appropriate treatment.
