The impact of the Montreux convention on NATO regarding the security of the black sea region
This study examines how the Montreux Convention shapes NATO’s defense posture on the Eastern Flank within the Black Sea security environment. Building on international relations theory, maritime law, and geopolitical analysis, it evaluates regional security and international cooperation under Montreux’s legal regime. Using literature review, comparative analysis, and case studies, the research finds that Montreux remains pivotal to regional stability and international security dynamics, constraining naval movements while providing predictability that reduces escalation risks. The study argues that updating the Convention is essential to protect Turkey’s sovereign rights amid technological advances, the militarization of space, evolving cyber threats, and shifting global power balances. It further contends that coordinated policies and deeper cooperation between regional states and NATO are necessary to deter threats, safeguard critical energy routes, and enhance crisis management. Overall, the paper highlights Montreux’s enduring relevance and outlines pathways to adapt its framework to contemporary strategic realities.
