Reflections in Resin: Three-dimensional Profilometric Insights into Composite Polishing Techniques
Aim: This study aims to evaluate the surface roughness of composite resin restorations subjected to finishing and polishing using two different polishing systems, using three-dimensional (3D) profilometry.Materials and methods: Forty-two composite resin samples will be prepared using a silicone mold and randomly divided into three groups: Group I-control (cured under Mylar strips; no polishing system will be used), group II-polishing using the Shofu Super-Snap kit, and group III-polishing using Ivoclar Vivadent Optragloss. After finishing the samples with a fluted tungsten carbide bur, polishing with the said polishing kits will be done.Samples will be evaluated for surface roughness using a 3D profilometer. Results: Surface roughness values (Ra) were highest for the Ivoclar Vivadent Optragloss group and least for the control group. The surface roughness values of the Shofu Super-Snap group were almost similar to the control group. Conclusion: Within the limitations of the present in vitro study, it can be concluded that the control group and the Shofu Super-Snap polishing group show lesser surface alterations when compared to the Ivoclar Vivadent Optragloss polishing group.Clinical significance: A smooth polished surface improves the longevity of a restoration by reducing plaque retention, gingival inflammation, and recurrent caries.Proper techniques for finishing and polishing play a significant role in improving the esthetics and longevity of restorations.
