Human Paced Cognition: Foundations of a New Cognitive Ecology
Human‑Paced Cognition: Foundations of a New Cognitive Ecology introduces a unified theoretical framework explaining why modern cognition is collapsing under synthetic, machine‑paced environments. The paper argues that human cognition evolved inside slow, stable, embodied, and informationally sparse ecologies — and that contemporary environments now generate predictions, impulses, salience gradients, and interpretive frames faster than human operators can integrate them. This shift breaks the developmental, environmental, evolutionary, and architectural conditions under which operator repertoires form. The work presents the Bailey Stack: a layered ontology of cognitive collapse consisting of the Operator Delay Loop (ODL), the Synthetic Prediction Stack (SPS), evolutionary temporal mismatch, Socratic AI as architectural restoration, and Human‑Paced Cognitive Ecology (HPCE) as the field that integrates them. It defines operators as the generative engine of cognition, explains how endogenous generativity is replaced by synthetic prediction, and shows how agency erodes when operator chains fail. The paper concludes by declaring HPCE as a new discipline — one that studies cognition as an ecological system and defines the conditions under which human generativity can remain coherent inside non‑neutral environments.
