Unmasking Anomalies: Religious Postfeminism and the Ideal Woman on a Kerala Salafi-Reformist YouTube Channel

This paper reconstructs the ideal woman built by Unmasking Anomalies, a prolific Malayalam-language Salafi-reformist YouTube channel in Kerala, India. Drawing on a complete metadata census of the channel’s output and a close watching of 63 videos, it argues that the channel operates not through prohibition but through persuasion, recoding constraint as a woman’s own empowered choice. The ideal woman it constructs has four facets, a governed body, a provided-for dependent, a protected ward, and a presence kept second, each grounded in an appeal to fixed biology. Reading what the channel says against what its production choices enact, the analysis shows this ideal argued in speech and enacted in a visibility gradient that keeps aligned women unshown while exposing opponents. The paper names this formation religious postfeminism, a patriarchal bargain dressed in the postfeminist language of choice, and extends feminist media scholarship on postfeminism beyond its secular, Western frame.
