Synthesis of the 10th Anniversary VORTEX-USA Workshop : A Decade of Tornado Research and Improving Societal Resilience

This white paper synthesizes the outcomes of the VORTEX-USA 10th Anniversary Workshop, held in Norman, Oklahoma, from March 30 to April 1, 2026. With an attendance of approximately 100 students and professionals from academic, research, outreach, and operational meteorological communities, the workshop served as a critical forum for evaluating a decade of federal investment in tornado science. The primary themes centered on the program’s three pillars: Physical Science, Social & Behavioral Sciences (SBS), and Engagement & Community Outreach. This report provides a brief decadal review of VORTEX-USA supported research, followed by a synthesis of participant feedback to delineate directions for tornado research, emphasizing the transition of foundational science into actionable operational tools.
