Education and Nation-Building: Revisiting Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya's Vision in the Light of the National Education Policy 2020

Education has a long association with nation building, social change, and human development. Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya believed that education is necessary for the development of character, national consciousness, social responsibility and a self-reliant nation. The objective of his education was to bring together Indian cultural traditions with moral values and Indian spiritual ideals with modern science, technical knowledge, vocational competence and research. The institutionalisation of this vision was in the form of Banaras Hindu University, which aimed at integrating Indian knowledge traditions with modern education and professional training. This present study focuses on Malaviya's Educational Philosophy and its relevance in the present context in the National Education Policy 2020. The study is qualitative in nature and descriptive and analytical in design and relied entirely on secondary sources like the speeches and writings of Malaviya, institutional documents of BHU, National Education Policy 2020, Indian knowledge system guidelines and relevant academic literature. This analysis is based on five dimensions namely holistic and value-based education, education for nation-building, empowerment of teacher, skill and vocational education and integration of Indian Knowledge Systems with modern scientific knowledge. The study finds significant conceptual relevance of Malaviya’s educational ideas with NEP 2020. Both approaches view education as a way of building intellectually capable, ethically responsible, socially sensitive, culturally rooted and professionally competent citizens. Yet, Malaviya’s ideas should not be mechanically adopted. Its modern relevance requires a critical engagement with constitutional values, pluralism, scientific temper, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, social diversity and changing employment requirements. The paper concludes that Malaviya’s educational vision can provide an important philosophical basis for implementing NEP 2020 and developing an inclusive, innovative, self-reliant and socially responsible India.
