Leadership as the Awakening of Khudi: A Developmental Journey Through Iqbal’s Poetic Vision
Abstract This paper reconstructs a developmental model of leadership grounded in Iqbal’s Urdu and Persian poetry, arguing that leadership is not a managerial role but a spiritual‑psychological ascent rooted in the awakening of Khudi. Using a textual‑hermeneutic methodology of close reading, thematic extraction, and developmental synthesis, the study identifies a nine‑stage arc through which the Self evolves: ontological shock, purpose formation, desire, passion, conviction, disciplined action, experiential wisdom, learning, and Faqr (moral sovereignty). The model extends a nine‑year research program on Khudi’s developmental architecture, integrating earlier hermeneutic and grounded‑theory findings with a new interpretive synthesis focused on leadership. Rather than claiming that Iqbal formulated a formal leadership theory, the paper articulates a developmental structure implicit in his poetic vision of human becoming. The resulting framework contributes to leadership theory, Islamic intellectual history, and the psychology of human development by offering a literary‑philosophical account of how leaders emerge through inner struggle, imagination, emotional intensity, reflective wisdom, and moral independence.
