Sustainability Plan for the AOP Knowledge Base and the AOP-Wiki

The Adverse Outcome Pathway Knowledge Base (AOP-KB), with the AOP-Wiki at its centre, has become an internationally recognised resource for organising and sharing mechanistic knowledge in support of chemical safety assessment, New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and Next Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA). This Sustainability Plan outlines a community-driven roadmap to secure the long-term continuity and evolution of the AOP-KB. It proposes maintaining the current AOP-Wiki 2.x while developing a next-generation AOP-KB 3.0 Core. As illustrated in Figure 1 of the Sustainability Plan, the proposed future architecture combines a single authoritative source of governed AOP knowledge with a federated layer of specialised capabilities that can be developed, financed and maintained by different organisations or consortia. Independent third-party tools can continue to build on AOP-KB knowledge through public interfaces and data services. The entire ecosystem is supported by shared principles of interoperability, scientific credibility, regulatory trust and sustainable governance. The Plan identifies six Calls for Action, addressing the demonstration of value and impact, operational continuity, development of AOP-KB 3.0, preservation of institutional knowledge, broader participation and shared stewardship. Above all, this Plan is an invitation to action. Its successful implementation depends on organisations, institutions, research initiatives and individuals willing to contribute expertise, resources, funding or leadership. The Calls for Action provide concrete opportunities to become involved, allowing contributors to participate according to their interests, capabilities and resources. The international AOP community and all organisations benefiting from the AOP-KB are warmly invited to join this collective effort and help shape the future of this important scientific resource.
