Poetics of the illness experience: using the power of images in psychiatric care

SUMMARY Modern psychiatry’s reliance on diagnostic checklists and digital systems can obscure what makes each patient’s suffering unique. We lose the lived reality of distress – the embodied, emotional truth that patients actually experience. This article proposes a different approach: ‘psychiatric poetics’. We argue that clinicians need a toolkit for engaging with the imaginative, fragmented and emotional language patients use to describe their worlds. Our review is essentially atheoretical and intended for use in general clinical practice. Psychiatric poetics encourages mental health professionals to look beyond standardised categories and attend to the particular ways in which suffering is experienced and expressed. By creating space for patients’ images, fragments and contradictions, it may help clinicians recognise aspects of human suffering that conventional psychiatric language can overlook. In this sense, psychiatric poetics offers a practical and creative approach to the human work at the heart of psychiatric care.
