Back to “where they come from”: Are Moroccan migrants’ descendants leaving Europe?

In recent years, media coverage and academic research have drawn attention to a possible new mobility pattern among descendants of Moroccan migrants in Europe. Some, especially highly educated young adults, appear to be considering or undertaking moves to Morocco after growing up in countries such as Belgium, France, or the Netherlands. But does this represent an emerging behavioural trend among descendants, or is the idea of a “return to origins” more myth than reality?

Abstract

In recent years, media coverage and academic research have drawn attention to a possible new mobility pattern among descendants of Moroccan migrants in Europe. Some, especially highly educated young adults, appear to be considering or undertaking moves to Morocco after growing up in countries such as Belgium, France, or the Netherlands. But does this represent an emerging behavioural trend among descendants, or is the idea of a “return to origins” more myth than reality?
