ABSTRACT: Beginning with the author's childhood memories of exchanging old coins and banknotes after arriving in Taiwan in 1949, this article traces the distinct development of Fabi, Gold Yuan notes, and Silver Yuan notes in mainland China, and of the Old Taiwan Dollar and New Taiwan Dollar in Taiwan. It also compares Sun Yat-sen portrait "Junk Dollar" designs dated Years 21 through 24 of the Republic of China. Particular attention is given to the distinction between the standard "three birds above the junk" silver dollar and the unadopted gold-standard pattern coin. The article then examines the relationships between paper currency and the 1949 Guangxi 20-cent silver coin, the 1949 Taiwan 50-cent silver coin, and the 1950 Taiwan 20-cent aluminum coin. By distinguishing monetary units, metal value, and institutional credibility, it explains why high-denomination banknotes and low-denomination coins could coexist. It also recalls the collecting tradition passed down by the author's mother, Madam Zhu Xiuyu, and his two elder brothers. Personal recollections are distinguished from documentary research, and photographs are not treated as substitutes for the physical authentication of coins. KEYWORDS: life writing; childhood memories; Fabi; Gold Yuan notes; Silver Yuan notes; Old Taiwan Dollar; New Taiwan Dollar; Junk Dollars; gold-standard pattern coins; family coin-collecting history. 目錄
