Cognition as Operator Architecture: Conscious Integration, Subconscious Generativity, and the Derivation of Option Sets
This paper presents a mechanistic account of cognition as an operator architecture. Subconscious operators generate predictions, impulses, interpretations, and candidate actions, forming the organism’s option set—the structured manifold of possibilities available at any moment. Consciousness functions as the global integrator, evaluating, endorsing, inhibiting, and sequencing operator outputs. Development expands the option set through structural feedback, while collapse contracts it through distorted pacing, synthetic feedback, and operator interruption. The framework unifies subconscious generativity, conscious integration, manifold structure, and environmental pacing into a single architecture of agency.
