Health Promotion Effects on Sleep and Quality of Life in Maternal Obesity

HEALTH-PROMOTION TRAINING EFFECTS ON SLEEP AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN MATERNAL OBESITYABSTRACTObjective: This study evaluated the effect of health promotion behaviour education on sleep quality and obesity-specific quality of life in pregnant women with maternal obesity. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted from 1 January to 30 June 2022 at family health centres affiliated with the Aydın Provincial Directorate of Health. Eligible pregnant women with a body mass index of 30.00 kg/m² or higher were included. Data were collected using the Sociodemographic Information Form, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Obesity-Specific Quality of Life Scale and analysed using SPSS 24.0. Baseline characteristics were compared with parametric and categorical tests. Changes in PSQI and OSQOL scores were analysed using generalised estimating equations, and group, time, and group × time effects were tested with the Wald chi-square test. Results: Time and group × time effects were significant for PSQI scores. Sleep quality improved over time in the intervention group (p < 0.001), whereas no significant change was observed in the control group. Group, time, and group × time effects were not significant for OSQOL scores, indicating no intervention effect on obesity-specific quality of life. Conclusion: The education improved sleep quality but had no significant short-term effect on obesity-specific quality of life. Keywords: Maternal Obesity, Pregnancy, Health Promotion Behaviours, Sleep Quality, Quality of Life.
