Retaining NC's Nursing Workforce
Retaining NC’s Nursing Workforce is a workforce research report designed to inform NC’s nurses and healthcare leaders about nursing turnover with the intention of strengthening health workforce retention efforts across the state. Drawing on findings from a statewide survey of more than 11,000 registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants, the report identifies the factors that influence nursing personnel to stay in or leave their jobs and organizations. Six practical priorities are outlined in the report, derived from the voices of nursing personnel, which are essential to address retention efforts: offer competitive compensation and benefits; address workplace wellness and work-life balance; foster positive work environments; engage in staff recognition efforts; offer career development and advancement opportunities; and promote the development of strong organizational relationships. With North Carolina projected to face substantial nursing shortages in the coming years, the report underscores the urgent need for coordinated, adaptable strategies that improve working conditions, support nursing personnel, and sustain a stable workforce. The findings for this report were derived from the RETAIN study, conducted through a collaboration between the School of Nursing and the NC Area Health Education Centers (AHEC).
