A Word About . . . LGBTQ+ Inclusion and Belonging in Churches
This essay considers two seemly contradictory trends in the United States right now: on the one hand, increasing acceptance of LGBTQ+ people culturally and even in churches and, on the other hand, increasing political and legislative attacks against them. Although more churches have taken steps to welcome and accept queer members into their communities of faith, simply “welcoming” or even “affirming” LGBTQ+ people is not enough and should be understood as the beginning of the work of inclusion, not the endpoint. Churches can foster deeper belonging through intentional practices, such as visible signs of affirmation (e.g., rainbows), participation in worship and leadership, and public advocacy. In an increasingly hostile context, churches can play a vital role in affirmation, solidarity, and celebration of LGBTQ+ lives.
