The Role of Technology and Innovation Management in Enhancing Productivity Management Within Small and Medium-Sized Manufacturing Enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa

This study investigates the role of technology and innovation management (TIM) in enhancing productivity management within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa. Using Jenga’s Theory of Creativity, Systems Theory, and Schumpeter’s Theory, the research seeks to address the gap between technology and innovation features in productivity management. It employs a mixed-methods approach, primarily using quantitative data collected through questionnaires administered to various manufacturing SMEs. Findings reveal that implementing specific technologies in the manufacturing process significantly affects employee productivity and introduces unique operational objectives. The study also highlights experimental solutions used to address implementation challenges, demonstrating SMEs’ adaptability and resilience. The outcome independent variables are organizational structure efficiency, organizational leadership efficiency, planning for technologically based processes, planning for production innovation, technology assessment, knowledge management, and production time improvement. The research highlights the importance of a balanced approach to technology integration, as illustrated by Jenga’s Theory of Creativity. Systems Theory underscores the interconnectedness of various elements within the productivity management framework, emphasizing the need for strategic planning and effective leadership. The study concludes that targeted technology and innovation management practices can substantially improve productivity and competitiveness in manufacturing SMEs. The developed framework serves as a guide for organizations aiming to enhance their operational efficiency through innovative solutions. Limitation—the paper only zoomed in on technology and innovation management-related attributes.
