Mapping Biomass Sources of Crustacean Residues and Macroalgae for the Development of High-value Food and Feed

This poster presents the mapping of European biomass sources and processing hotspots for two MARMADE value chains: crustacean-processing residues and macroalgae. Combining statistical data, industry information and geospatial analysis, the study identifies key sourcing opportunities across Europe. Findings highlight Spain and Italy as major hotspots for crustacean residues, while wild-harvested brown algae dominate European seaweed production. Emerging opportunities include invasive blue crab, aquaculture-grown Ulva and stranded Rugulopteryx okamurae. The results support the development of reliable biomass supply chains for sustainable biorefinery processes and high-value food and feed ingredients.

Abstract

Combining statistical data, industry information and geospatial analysis, the study identifies key sourcing opportunities across Europe. Findings highlight Spain and Italy as major hotspots for crustacean residues, while wild-harvested brown algae dominate European seaweed production. Emerging opportunities include invasive blue crab, aquaculture-grown Ulva and stranded Rugulopteryx okamurae. The results support the development of reliable biomass supply chains for sustainable biorefinery processes and high-value food and feed ingredients.
