What Is the Matter? A Role-First Architecture for Matter Identities, Embedded Structures, and Connective Tissue
The science of matter has a language problem. The same words—state, phase, order, and regime—are used for different physical responsibilities, while different fields often use different words for closely related organizations. Matter identities, host-bound structures, mechanisms, responses, platforms, and broad classes are consequently placed on the same conceptual level, obscuring both their differences and their relationships. Matter Matrix Specification v1.0 provides a role-first architecture that separates matter identities, embedded physical architectures, and connective architectures across 23 physical-role types, with Family/class retained as a separate organizational index. The Matrix and its nomenclature were constructed with the assistance of Domain Science because systematic mapping revealed recurring structure types and their distinct roles. We evaluated 673 distinct entries using the Matter Matrix. The results distinguish matter identities from the embedded and connective architectures that organize, generate, stabilize, transform, and reveal them. Six prospective candidates are highlighted: two proposed matter identities and four embedded or connective architectures. All remain unconfirmed hypotheses with explicit falsifiers and minimum tests and await specialist validation.
