Pharmacognostic Analysis and Identification of Phytoconstituents Present in Cyperus iria by Chromatographic Analysis

Introduction: Cyperus iria, is a common weed found in paddy field which has notable medicinal benefits. Various species of Cyperus is found to having different pharmacological activity like anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiarrhoeal etc. Objectives: The main objective of the study is to evaluate pharmacognostic, phytochemical and chromatographic analyses of the entire Cyperus iria. The study aims to investigate the possible therapeutic uses in addition to conventional pharmacognostic evaluations. Methods: The plants were collected and extraction were completed using successive solvents such as petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and water. The extracts were further analysed for TLC, HPTLC, HRLCMS study. Results: Alkaloids, carbohydrates, flavonoids, glycoside and proteins were verified by physical characterisation and phytochemical screening of the various extracts. These techniques confirm the effectiveness and dependability of crude drug identification by providing a thorough grasp of the chemical makeup of the plant. The investigated extracts may include flavonoid, coumarin glycoside according to TLC results. The marker compound, quercetin was also detected by HPTLC. The HRLCMS chromatography was performed to find out the phytoconstituents present in the extract of Cyperus iria. Conclusion: The results demonstrate the potential of Cyperus iria as a source of new wound healing compounds. In vivo investigations to ascertain pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and toxicity should be the main emphasis of future research, followed by clinical trials to demonstrate therapeutic efficacy.
