Philosophy and the Investigation of the Disciplines: Against the Absurdity of Intellectual Separation

This paper argues that disciplinary boundaries are useful divisions of inquiry but should not be mistaken for divisions within existence itself. Philosophy neither replaces nor rules over specialized disciplines; rather, it engages their findings, assumptions, concepts, foundations, implications, and limits. The paper proposes an undivided approach to inquiry in which specialized investigation and philosophical reflection continuously inform one another.

Abstract

This paper argues that disciplinary boundaries are useful divisions of inquiry but should not be mistaken for divisions within existence itself. Philosophy neither replaces nor rules over specialized disciplines; rather, it engages their findings, assumptions, concepts, foundations, implications, and limits. The paper proposes an undivided approach to inquiry in which specialized investigation and philosophical reflection continuously inform one another.
