Integrated Approach on Management of Psoriasis Vulgaris Using Traditional Medicine-A Case Study
Introduction: Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin disorder characterized by scaly, itchy lesions that can significantly affect quality of life. Although conventional therapies provide symptom relief, concerns regarding adverse effects have encouraged interest in traditional systems such as Siddha medicine. Siddha approaches emphasize holistic management through internal medicines, external therapies, diet, and lifestyle modifications Methods: A 30-year-old male diagnosed with psoriasis, presenting with widespread scaly, itchy skin lesions, was treated with a Siddha therapeutic regimen. Internal medicines included Siddhathi oil as a purgative, Parangipattai tablets, Sivanarvembu Kuzhithailam, and Avuri Chooranam. External therapies included Arakku Thylam and Vetpalai Karunjeerga oil. Treatment response was assessed using the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) before and after treatment. Results: The patient showed marked clinical improvement following Siddha treatment. The baseline PASI score was 32, indicating severe psoriasis. Following the treatment regimen, the PASI score decreased to 0, indicating complete clinical clearance of the assessed skin lesions. Conclusions: The substantial reduction in PASI score suggests potential benefits of an integrated Siddha approach involving internal medicines, purgation, and external therapies in psoriasis management. While this case study provides promising results, further research with larger sample sizes and controlled trials is necessary to validate these findings and understand the mechanisms behind the efficacy of Siddha medicine in treating psoriasis This case highlights the potential role of Siddha medicine in the management of psoriasis and provides a basis for further investigation. Larger, well-designed controlled clinical studies are required to evaluate its safety, efficacy, and therapeutic mechanisms.
