The subordinator yáthā plus subjunctive: Atharvavedic practice and Pāṇinian suggestions

The present paper aims to analyse all the Śaunakīya-Atharvaveda occurrences of yáthā plus subjunctive in order to understand their syntactic-semantic status. This work notably relies on Pāṇini’s grammar (4th c. BCE), which describes such clauses as cases of co-occurrence of two verbal bases linked by a cause-effect relationship, rather than being grounded in a hierarchy of matrix and subordinate clauses.

Abstract

The present paper aims to analyse all the Śaunakīya-Atharvaveda occurrences of yáthā plus subjunctive in order to understand their syntactic-semantic status. This work notably relies on Pāṇini’s grammar (4th c. BCE), which describes such clauses as cases of co-occurrence of two verbal bases linked by a cause-effect relationship, rather than being grounded in a hierarchy of matrix and subordinate clauses.
