Special Report from the CDC: A literature review and update of the evidence in the intimate partner violence prevention resource for action
Introduction: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is abuse or aggression that occurs in a romantic relationship. IPV can have extensive short- and long-term impacts on physical health, mental health, and overall well-being. In 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published the Intimate Partner Violence Prevention Resource for Action which included seven strategies to prevent IPV based on scientific evidence. Methods: A literature review was conducted to identify new rigorous evidence (e.g., meta-analyses, systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies) for interventions designed to reduce IPV or risk for IPV. An artificial intelligence-supported literature search guided by predefined search terms and parameters (English-language articles from 2014 – 2024) was followed by targeted manual searches (2024 – mid 2025). All articles were manually reviewed for selection. Results: The literature review yielded 12 new example programs, policies, or practices with evidence of effectiveness to prevent IPV or risk for IPV within the following strategies: teach safe and healthy relationships, engage influential adults and peers, disrupt the developmental pathways toward partner violence, strengthen economic supports for families, and support survivors to increase safety and lessen harms. The new evidence demonstrated reductions in IPV victimization and perpetration; improvements in conflict management among couples; reductions in risk factors for IPV including in depression symptoms and substance use; and reduced decision conflict about seeking help. Conclusions: New evidence was identified that bolsters support for the previously identified strategies and approaches and expands the available options for programs, policies, and programs that can be considered when developing comprehensive IPV prevention plans. Practical applications: The findings from this literature review can be used in conjunction with the 2017 Intimate Partner Violence Prevention Resource for Action to inform action by institutions, organizations, or groups that are focused on enhancing health and safety through violence prevention.
