A Year Dedicated to Honoring the Patient Voice
ABSTRACT This reflective article introduces a 2027 HeartBeat of Case Management Department theme centered on honoring the patient voice. This theme is key to professional case management as effective care begins with understanding what matters most to the individual receiving services. Case managers have a responsibility to listen to patients' goals, preferences, values, concerns, and lived experiences and ensure these perspectives influence care planning and coordination. Amplifying the patient's voice supports autonomy, shared decision-making, informed consent, and culturally responsive practice. It also helps identify barriers that may otherwise remain overlooked, including social, behavioral, financial, and access-related challenges. By placing the patient's voice at the center of communication and advocacy, case managers promote person-centered, ethical, equitable, and meaningful care.
