The pattern of revisionist strategy: From Cyprus to Ukraine
Drawing on Türkiye’s illegal military invasion of the independent island Republic of Cyprus and occupation of Cypriot territory, classic strategic theory, and empirical war studies, this article delineates a pattern of revisionist strategy. Within this framework, an aggressor state alters existing borders and the regional balance of power through the erosion of sovereignty and incremental territorial annexation. This strategy operates across three sequential phases: political subversion, direct military intervention, and post-conflict territorial consolidation. Ultimately, the pattern provides an analytical tool for theorists, statesmen, and military practitioners, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine underscoring its enduring contemporary relevance.
