Seismic Assessment of the High-Rise Residential Building with Reinforced Concrete Structural Walls from the 1960s

This paper presents the seismic assessment of a 23-story reinforced concrete residential building in Sarajevo, constructed in 1969. The structural system consists of relatively thin walls and slabs, adapted to implement tunnel formwork technology. The walls were designed and detailed with relatively limited reinforcement, so they do not meet the requirements of contemporary seismic codes. Nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed in SAP2000 and DIANA FEA software packages using earthquake acceleration records. The building exhibits satisfactory global response under moderate shaking but develops nonlinear behavior, reinforcement yielding, and cracking in the lower wall zones during stronger events, confirming its seismic vulnerability.
