USING 60-GHZ RADAR SENSING TECHNOLOGY FOR ROAD-SURFACE NONUNIFORMITY DETECTION
Road nonuniformities and obstructions cause damage to motor vehicles and pose safety risks to vehicle operators and passengers. This paper describes a method of road-nonuniformity detection using radar that will alert the driver of potential road nonuniformities, primarily potholes. The system uses a transceiver module mounted onto the front of a motor vehicle. The module sends and receives a 60-GHz signal and alerts the motorist when the radar receives a signal that crosses its internal threshold of nonuniformity detection. The basic premise of this radar system is based on three awarded U.S. patents, illustrating the path of ongoing research and development, starting from idea conception and leading toward a functional product. This paper provides the first experimental stages of this process with encouraging results.
