Plaid Cymru Finally Comes of Age? Electoral Success and Political Transformation in the 2026 Senedd Election

Abstract This article examines Plaid Cymru's historic electoral success in the 2026 Senedd election, winning the most votes and becoming the largest party in Senedd Cymru (the Welsh Parliament) for the first time since the establishment of devolved institutions in 1999. The result is even more significant given that it brought an end to almost three decades of Labour dominance of devolved elections and politics in Wales. The article considers this electoral breakthrough in the context of the opportunities and challenges Plaid Cymru has encountered in postdevolution Wales, alongside the distinctive political context of the 2026 election. It explores how major electoral reforms, changing public attitudes towards political parties and new campaigning strategies contributed to the party's electoral advance. Plaid Cymru's win marks a transformation of the Welsh political landscape, opening up new opportunities and challenges for the party as it assumes its new role of governing Wales.
