Preventive Care, Regenerative Biology, and Diagnostic Innovation in Dentomaxillofacial Science: An Editorial Review

Objective: To synthesize studies in the Journal of Dentomaxillofacial Science (JDMFS, Vol. 11, Iss. 2, 2026) into a coherent account of the field's clinical, biological and public health directions. Methods: A qualitative thematic synthesis of 13 articles (original articles, systematic reviews, and a case report) published in this issue was performed. The studies were grouped into four domains: public health and patient-centered care, biomaterials, regenerative science and antimicrobial strategies, clinical, surgical and diagnostic innovations, and molecular oncology and rare pathologies. For each, we summarized the knowledge, identified contributions, and outlined research priorities. Results: Caries risk assessment was the strongest predictor of adolescent OHRQoL (β = 25.26, p < 0.001), exceeding the cumulative caries experience. Complete denture rehabilitation improved OHRQoL in diabetic edentulous patients (OHIP-14 from 29 to 4.84 in six months), while perceived barriers dominated children's tooth brushing behavior. Fibroblast growth factor-2 enhanced early bone regeneration; engineered implant surfaces increased bone-to-implant contact to 85–92%; treated dentin matrix hydrogel outperformed mineral trioxide aggregate and Biodentine; and Sargassum binderi mouthwash matched chlorhexidine. A convolutional neural network achieved 83.33% accuracy for periodontal bone loss staging, and NOTCH intracellular domain 1 expression was associated with pulmonary metastasis in adenoid cystic carcinoma (odds ratio 17.0, p < 0.001).Conclusion: This issue highlights the movement toward risk-stratified prevention, regenerative materials, and AI-assisted diagnostics, while underscoring the need for larger samples, standardized protocols, and long-term validation.
