A Survey of Aseptic Practices in Veterinary Endodontics: Vital Pulp Treatment and Root Canal Treatment
The aim of this study was to characterize aseptic practices used by American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) diplomates during vital pulp treatment (VPT) and root canal treatment (RCT) to gain a better understanding of current practices and identify areas of variability. A voluntary, anonymous web-based survey consisting of questions relating to various aseptic practices used during VPT and RCT was disseminated to AVDC diplomates via an online listserv. Responses were analyzed to compare aseptic practices between the 2 procedures, evaluate the influence of years since board certification on use of aseptic practices, and assess associations between aseptic technique and antibiotic prescribing practices. A total of 103 complete responses were analyzed. Substantial variability in aseptic practices was identified. Several aseptic measures, including rubber dam use, were performed significantly more frequently during VPT than RCT ( P < .05). Rubber dam use was uncommon overall, with 64.04% of respondents never using one for VPT and 75.73% never using one for RCT. Breaches in aseptic technique were associated with increased antibiotic prescribing. There was no significant difference between pre- and perioperative antibiotic use between VPT and RCT, but postoperative antibiotic use was significantly more common following VPT than RCT ( P = 1.03 × 10 −7 ). Aseptic practices among AVDC diplomates vary widely, indicating the absence of standardized guidelines for veterinary endodontics. These findings underscore the need for evidence-based recommendations and further investigation into the relationship between aseptic technique and clinical outcomes in veterinary patients.
