Agricultural Product Price Changes and Profitability of Producers and Processors: A Formal-Analytical Framework

Agricultural product prices enter agricultural producers’ revenue functions and agri-food processors’ raw-material cost functions, implying that the same price change generates opposing direct effects within the profitability measures considered for these two market participants. This study develops a formal-analytical framework to examine this mechanism and to identify the conditions under which adverse price movements can be offset by improvements in producer output-to-input productivity or processor raw-material productivity. The analysis is based on microeconomic relationships between prices, output, input use, revenues, costs, and profitability, considered separately from the perspectives of agricultural producers and agri-food processors. The derived relationships imply that, ceteris paribus, an increase in the agricultural product price raises the defined producer profitability ratio while reducing the processor’s raw-material-based partial profitability ratio, whereas a price decrease generates the opposite direct effects. These are analytical implications of the model rather than empirical estimates; realized profitability changes may differ because output, input quantities and prices, resource-use efficiency, and downstream prices may adjust simultaneously. The framework further indicates that productivity improvements constitute the main endogenous mechanism for compensating for unfavorable price developments, although such adjustment is constrained in the short run. The proposed approach provides a theoretical basis for subsequent empirical and scenario-based analyses of producer–processor price relationships and may support the assessment of market developments and agricultural policy.
