Psychometric Properties of the French Version of the Provider Co-Management Index-RN
Background Strengthening primary care through team-based models is a global priority as strong primary care systems are consistently associated with improved outcomes. The Provider Co-Management Index for Registered Nurses (PCMI-RN) is a validated instrument measuring co-management (i.e., cohesiveness of providers managing the same patient) between interdisciplinary providers; however, no validated French-language version exists, limiting applicability. Purpose To translate the PCMI-RN into French and evaluate its psychometric properties. Methodology The PCMI-RN was translated into French using a forward-backward translation method. An online survey collected data from Registered Nurses working in primary care settings across Canada between October 2023 and March 2024, including responses on the PCMI-RN (French Version). Statistical analyses included measures of reliability, specifically internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), and iterative factor modelling to assess construct validity. Results A total of 354 French-language responses were analyzed. The PCMI-RN (French Version) demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.942), with item-total correlations ranging from 0.539 to 0.755. Goodness-of-fit indices (RMSEA < 0.08, CFI > 0.90) supported the model's construct validity when loaded onto a single factor and were consistent with the original PCMI. The PCMI-RN (French Version) retained the theoretical integrity of the original instrument. Conclusion The PCMI-RN (French Version) is a reliable and valid tool for assessing co-management in French-speaking primary care contexts. Its availability supports nursing practice by offering a standardized French language tool that can inform professional development, strengthen team-based care, and facilitate comparisons across regions and countries, contributing to improved interdisciplinary collaboration.
