Comprehensive genetic counseling in pediatric cancer: Overcoming challenges and setting standards
Comprehensive genetic counseling in pediatric oncology is a complex and evolving field with unique challenges and considerations. There is a need for specialized genetic counseling services, particularly in cancer predisposition surveillance. The article emphasizes the crucial roles of genetic counseling in pediatric hereditary cancer, the involvement of genetic professionals, parental attitudes, and other influencing factors in integrating genetic counseling and testing. A referral to genetic counseling is essential for the diagnosis of genetic disorders. Clearly articulate the importance of the genetic test type, the level of analysis, challenges in prenatal testing for hereditary cancers, and the test’s advantages and limitations. Together, the genetics specialist and oncology team can work to achieve the best possible outcome. It involves assessing the risk of inherited cancer syndromes, guiding genetic testing, and interpreting results to inform treatment and management strategies. DNA banking is essential before initiating treatment or in cases of a poor prognosis.
