Transformations in Voter Decision-Making and Electoral Dynamics: A Study of Indian General Elections, 2014–2024

This is one of the most defining times of change in the Indian electoral landscape, with the electorate, campaigns, communication and electoral contests undergoing a significant shift from 2014 to 2024. This study explores the changing patterns of voter behavior and electoral dynamics in the three successive Indian General Elections 2014, 2019 and 2024. It examines the traditional parameters of voting behavior – caste, religion, class, region, party affiliation – and how they have increasingly become fused with contemporary issues like perceptions of leadership, performance of government, welfare schemes, economic aspirations, nationalism, influence through digital media, and social media participation in politics. The study also examines the influence of technological innovations such as electronic voting systems, voter awareness campaigns, data analytics, AI-powered political campaigns, and targeted political campaigns on electoral mobilization and voter participation. The study has been carried out with the help of secondary data collected from the Election Commission of India, Government reports, research articles published in various reputable research organizations, and scholarly literature, which facilitates in analyzing the trends and voting pattern during the past 10 years. The results suggest that Indians are becoming more informed, aspirational, and performance-focused, with a focus on holding people accountable, fostering development, executing policies, and judging leaders' performance. The study also reveals the growing involvement of both youth and women in elections, the growing influence of electronic communication, and the changing strategies of political parties to meet the evolving voter expectations. In general, the study confirms that the electoral process in India has now become a very dynamic, technologically advanced and issue-oriented democracy which is determined by the interplay of social, political, economic and technological factors. The study makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the current state of electoral behavior and gives insights to policy makers, political analysts, researchers and democratic institutions. seeking to strengthen electoral participation, democratic governance, and the integrity of future elections in India.
