Internalization of Character Education Values through the Sorogan Method in the Study of the Aqidatul Awam Text for the Grade 1 Ula (Female) Class: A Case Study at Pondok Pesantren Manbaul Falah, Singojuruh, Banyuwangi
This research is motivated by the importance of character education in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and the limited studies that view the sorogan method not merely as a technique for learning to read classical texts (kitab), but as a medium for internalizing character values. In contrast to previous studies that focused more on academic improvement and learning motivation, this research positions sorogan as a vehicle for religious character formation in learning the kitab Aqidatul Awam. This qualitative case study was conducted at Manbaul Falah Islamic Boarding School, focusing on first-grade female students (kelas 1 Ula Putri). Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The main findings indicate that the character values internalized through the sorogan method include awareness of duty and responsibility, discipline, respect (adab/tawadhu’) toward teachers, independence, and perseverance. The internalization process occurs through direct practice (learning by doing), continuous habituation, integration with creed-based material that shapes spiritual intuition (dzauq), and the emotional relationship between teacher and student. The main obstacle is students’ initial misconception about literal memorization demands. This research contributes to enriching the literature on the affective dimension of the sorogan method in pesantren-based character education.
