After the Orderly Departure: Iraq and the Three Pillars of State Apocalypse
This working paper assesses the implications of the final withdrawal of United States forces from Iraq on 30 September 2026. Drawing on publicly available primary sources, including United States Central Command statements, Executive Order 13303 renewal documents, and international reporting on Iraq's hydrocarbon revenues, the study identifies three interlinked vectors of state fragility. It proposes an original analytical framework termed the Three Pillars of State Apocalypse, comprising military, economic, and legitimacy dimensions. The framework is operationalised through an author-generated Venn diagram illustrating overlapping failure scenarios. The analysis concludes that concurrent deterioration across all three pillars constitutes the threshold for comprehensive state collapse, with significant implications for regional security and post-occupation governance in Iraq. Keywords: Iraq; United States withdrawal; state collapse; political legitimacy; security sector reform; oil dependence
