Revitalizing Leadership Research: Three Directions

Abstract The contributions in this Point‐Counterpoint present divergent directions for revitalizing research on leadership. All three pieces express concerns with the current state of behavioral leadership research but place varying weight on those problems. How the three contributions define the most pressing issues with this literature and how they conceive of leadership itself leads to distinct agendas for the future of leadership studies: leadership as relationships in action, a theory‐based view of leadership, and a many‐valued logic approach. The introduction to this collection summarizes these perspectives, highlights where they converge and diverge, and considers their implications for the future of leadership scholarship. It concludes that leadership research is unlikely to advance by converging on a single paradigm. Rather, advances will more likely come from dialogue and debate, just like that occurring among the contributions to this Point‐Counterpoint.
