From Simplicity to the Filioque: A Proposal
Abstract I will defend the position that trinitarian metaphysics relying on a strict theory of divine simplicity has a significant ecumenical advantage over other approaches to trinitarian theology. Specifically, it can help us resolve disputes around the filioque irenically. A strict vision of divine simplicity entails that the filioque is simply a logical consequence of the metaphysics of relations implied. Since Eastern Fathers like the Cappadocians embrace a strict account of divine simplicity, then, if these Fathers are orthodox in their embrace of such accounts of simplicity, the logical implication of strict theories of simplicity – the filioque – ought also to be recognized as orthodox.
