Bronchial Asthma through the Lens of Homoeopathy

Abstract Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract, characterised by recurrent attacks of wheeze, cough, bronchial hyper-responsiveness, and eosinophilic inflammation resulting from a complex interplay between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Mainstream management primarily relies on inhalers and corticosteroids, which are no-doubt effective in symptom control but associated with long-term dependence. Homoeopathy is one such approach that offers an individualised therapeutic means that particularly addresses the diseases influenced by both constitutional predisposition and environmental triggers. The integration of homoeopathic treatment with dietary regulation, exercise aimed at improving airway function, and appropriate lifestyle modification contributes in long-term disease management. This review explores the potential role of homoeopathy as an integrated multifactorial approach in the holistic management of asthma, aimed to evaluate why symptom control does not necessarily equate to disease control. A comprehensive review of approximately 100 articles indexed in PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted to analyse the clinical patterns, recurrence, role of susceptibility, and management aspects of bronchial asthma. Bronchial asthma is widely recognized as a manageable chronic disease, yet characterized by recurrence and fluctuating symptom patterns. Although reports of successful long-term management with homoeopathy remain scarce, this review suggests that homoeopathic treatment when aimed at addressing individual susceptibility and combined with appropriate lifestyle modifications, holds potential for managing asthma over the long term. However, there is a need for future research to prioritise well-documented studies from routine clinical practice, particularly cases managed by homoeopathic physicians on a daily basis to generate solid evidence on real-world outcomes, phenotypic responses, and the effectiveness of homoeopathic management of asthma.
